The South Asian Students Cultural Association (SASCA) is back in action! You may have spotted them around campus selling delicious home baked goods or advertising for their exciting upcoming events! SASCA is a nonprofit organization and raises money for charities in South Asia such as Pratham, Aasthan Latif Welfare Society, and Khasdobir, which are charities to ensure education for South Asian children living in poverty. Upcoming events include the Nazaara Cultural Show and Holi, a celebration of colors celebrated throughout the world by South Asians. Details: Learn everything you need to know to keep your heart going strong from the experts at The University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center by joining us for the annual Healthy Heart Conference on February 4, 2012! Registration is $15/person and check-in begins at 8AM. Sign in will be located in the main lobby at the University of America Medical Center. Health screenings for blood pressure, diabetes and asthma will also be available in the cafeteria on a first-come, first-served basis until 11 a.m. provided by UA College of Pharmacy students. The program will begin in the DuVal Auditorium at 9:15 a.m.
Speakers: This year speakers include Gordon A. Ewy MD, Lorraine Mackstaller MD, Leslie Ritter PhD/RN, Betsy Dokken NP/PhD, Karl B. Kern MD, Julia Indik MD/PhD, and Robert S. Poston MD. Experts in their fields, they will provide education about how to keep your heart healthy, the important risk factors for heart disease, how to recognize stroke, and controlling diabetes. They will also present findings from research about unblocking arteries, controlling arrhythmias using ablations, and the frontier of robotic surgery.
Dialogue: This panel of Sarver Heart Center experts will also available to answer questions about cardiovascular health, heart disease and current treatment options during extensive Q&A Sessions. Based on successful panel discussions at past Sarver Heart Center events, Dr. Ewy has asked that we build lots of question-and-answer time into each presentation, so truly this conference can be a dialogue between the MDs and PhDs of the UA Sarver Heart Center and the community we serve. Bring your questions!

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Consortium

The University of Arizona Graduate College administers five undergraduate research programs. Most are summer-only programs; however, two programs are year-round. All are described below. These programs, along with affiliated Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) are collectively known as the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Consortium (UROC). The UROC programs are designed to prepare underrepresented students for the rigors of graduate school and give them the skills and motivation to apply to top graduate schools & programs. UROC provides participants with excellent research training and graduate school preparation.

Typical eligibility requirements:
Class standing
US citizen or permanent resident
3.0 GPA or above
Strong interest in pursuing graduate education, particularly in earning a master’s or PhD.
Low income or first generation college or underrepresented minority - (requirements vary by program; be sure to check the requirements for each program)
Dates: June 3 - August 8, 2012

Volunteer Services at UAMC South is recruiting for its pre-med volunteer program to accommodate their new Emergency Department.

What does it involve?
Students accepted into the program will be trained at the start of the Spring 2012 semester and are expected to serve a minimum of four hours a week in the Emergency Department. Volunteers will become part of the healthcare team. In addition to assisting ED staff and improving patient care, participants will have the opportunity to further their education through clinical observation, a variety of workshops, and interactions with the community.
Who should apply?
Junior and senior undergraduate students with intentions of applying to medical school and taking MCATS. We are looking for students who show initiative and potential as leaders in the healthcare field. You must be willing to serve a minimum of 100 hours as a volunteer.
How does this differ from other pre-med clinical experiences?
The basis for this program is to benefit the volunteers, as well as the hospital, patients, and staff by focusing on fostering cultural awareness and sensitivity—principles outlined by the FACES student organization. The Pre-Med program also involves a system of student leadership to give volunteers the opportunity to challenge themselves, foster educational relationships, and prepare themselves for future clinical practice.

The DRC has an adaptive fitness gym open to both students and community members and a renowned wheelchair sports program. The positions' responsibilities include:

Assistance with wheelchair rugby strengthening/conditioning and team practices.
Tournament support at wheelchair athletic competitions.

The Beckman Scholars Program is targeted to students majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), who are American citizens or permanent residents of the United States who are interested in a mentored research experience in the biological or chemical sciences. Eligible students must be current sophomores and juniors at the University of Arizona and be willing and able to work full time for a minimum of 10 weeks for two consecutive summers and part time during the intervening academic year.
The application requires students to prepare a research proposal based on a Scientific American article found on the UA Beckman Scholars’ website at: https://ubrp.arizona.edu/beckman.cfm . Finalists will be interviewed by a selection committee and are required to work with one of the fifteen Beckman Faculty mentors listed on the website.

Native American Cancer Prevention Program – Summer Internships.

The Partnership for Native American Cancer Prevention (NACP) is a collaboration between Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona's Cancer Center, and Native American Research and Training Center. Funding comes from the National Cancer Institute. The mission of the NACP is to alleviate the unequal burden of cancer among Native Americans of the Southwest through research, training and community outreach programs in collaboration with the communities they serve.

NACP is a Comprehensive Minority Institution/Cancer Center Partnership between Northern Arizona University and the University of Arizona's Cancer Center, and Native American Research and Training Center; all programs and projects are jointly developed and implemented at the two institutions.Programs are designed to facilitate the entry of Native Americans into biomedical research and healthcare professions while engaging communities in research and training relevant to their needs. Whole Body Vibration Research Study

Curious about how to improve your flexibility?
Find out by participating in our research study!
We are currently looking for healthy male and female participants aged 18-30 years old to participate in a study that will assess the effect of whole body vibration on muscle flexibility range of motion.
You need to be:
Healthy with no history of lower back pain and no history of cardiovascular disorders, migraines, epilepsy.
For this study, you will be randomized into 3 groups: Control Group, Treadmill Group, Whole Body Vibration Group. You will come to the Gittings Building at the University of Arizona every other day (three times a week) for a period of 2 weeks. Each session will last 15-30 minutes and consist of performing a sit and reach test followed by 5 minutes of activity (or 5 minutes of no activity if you are in control group) and then a follow-up sit and reach test. During the first visit, your body height and weight will be measured.
There is no cost to you to participate in this study. At any time (even after you give permission), you may refuse to perform a particular activity or drop from the study altogether. This is 100% okay with us; it is your decision to make and it will not affect your participation in any other activities at the University of Arizona.

Last year, the 27 undergraduate members of our club were able to help 600+ underprivileged individuals; this year, we are looking to exceed these numbers.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, BHQ asked all regions yesterday to promote the need for more blood donors to make up for the more than 70 drives that have been cancelled on the East Coast. The national inventory has a shortfall of more than 2,500 donations as of today and this number is expected to increase. This press release was distributed to media today. American Red Cross needs blood donors after Irene

TUCSON, Arizona, August 30, 2011-- In the wake of Hurricane Irene, the American Red Cross is urging immediate blood and platelet donations in areas unaffected by the storm. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-RED CROSS or 520-230-7295 or go to redcrossblood.org

The nation’s blood supply was low before the storm, as it is every summer, and Irene has caused the cancellation of more than 70 blood drives along the Eastern Coast, resulting in a shortfall of more than 2,500 blood donations.

Prior to the storm making landfall, the Red Cross moved blood products to the areas most likely to be affected so that those products would be available during and after the storm.

“Arizona sent 42 units of plasma last week to the East Coast,” said Darrin Greenlee, chief executive officer for the Arizona Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. “While that has helped, the expectation is that more blood drives will be cancelled in the coming days due to storm damage, and the need will continue for more blood donors to step up across the nation.”

While thousands of donors responded to a Red Cross appeal for blood in July, and the inventory stabilized somewhat, the need still remains. And this storm has impacted the ability to build the national blood inventory back up to sufficient levels.

“Donations typically decline around a holiday,” Greenlee added, “so we are urging people to make blood and platelet donations this week and next to ensure that we have a stable blood supply before and after Labor Day.”
Blood donor centers in Tucson will be open on Labor Day, and are located at 7401 N. La Cholla Blvd. and 7139 E. Broadway. Appointments are recommended. All those who attempt to donate now through Labor Day will be entered into drawings for a $50 gas card and a staycation at an Arizona hotel or resort.
Individuals who are at least 16 years of age, meet height and weight requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height), and who are generally in good health may be eligible to donate blood.

Cancer Resource Representative: This position is located both at the UMC Hematology and Oncology next to the Northwest Hospital and at the UMC Hospital. As a Cancer Resource Representative, you get to talk to the patients and their families directly and your job is to inform them about the different resources the American Cancer Society offers. If any patient happens to be interested in one or more of the programs, you sign them up. The hours are flexible and you choose what time and how many hours you want to volunteer.

Volunteer Driver: Basically you receive via email requests from patients needing transportation to their treatment. If you happen to be available and able to fulfill the request you reply to that specific coordinator and she connects you to the patient. Then you drive them to and from their treatment.

Electronic and paper data entry

Housekeeping of Chart files
Copying and faxing materials from charts to other offices
Printing medical consult evaluations for chart, family and primary care physician; preparing material for mailing
Shredding confidential materials
Providing family with Follow up Material electronically
This acquaints employee with health care confidentiality policies, with medical record keeping and with a wide range of medical knowledge available within the confidential medical record and from Dr. McDonough-Means about integrative health care and developmental pediatrics.
Other optional duties as time and employee ability allows:
Support for research and publications
Hours: 5-8 hours/week Pay: Hourly rate to be discussed
Qualifications:
Student who is in Honors program or with similar GPA who is planning on applying for Graduate school and/or Medical school.
Preferably a student who will be in Tucson year round – now a Junior; or if a Senior then needing and committed to work during Graduate school.
Able to commit to consistent time each week with some flexibility as to which specific hours negotiable with Dr McDonough-Means – approximate total needed: 5-8 hrs/week.

Congratulations to all the soon to be graduates! For all of you who are interested in a career in Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy I have a great opportunity for you at St. Joseph's Hospital.
I am a Rehab Technician and have recently been accepted into my first choice graduate program for Doctor of Physical Therapy. We are now looking for a full time replacement to work in the Neurological Institute.
I highly recommend this position to anyone with aspirations to be a therapist. It not only introduced me to a wealth of first hand experiences with direct patient care and undoubtedly got me into my first choice graduate school, but I can honestly say I cannot imagine a better group of people to work with. When I become a therapist I will certainly be returning to work with this exceptional group of people and extraordinary manager, Kary Spradling.

Would you like to continue learning about healthcare while you wait? If so, then Tygiel Physical Therapy is the place for you! We are looking for majors in physiology or related fields.
A full-time position will be opening at Tygiel Physical Therapy as a gym tech. The position will begin training in late March or early April, and no prior training is required. If you are still in school, arrangements can be made so you can still work and go to school until you graduate in May.
The position involves instructing patients in therapeutic exercises under the guidance of a physical therapist. You will also be trained in the various treatment modalities such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation.
I have worked at this clinic for 1 year and have enjoyed it. It has made me more qualified to apply, and helped both of us get in, to grad school and was definitely a fantastic experience. I would recommend it to anyone who has health care ambitions. We are located down the street from St. Joseph's hospital.

Project Sunshine is a nonprofit, nationwide organization that provides free educational, recreational, and social programs to children and families living with medical challenges.
If you are interested in becoming a member of Project Sunshine, come to our second New Member Meeting/Orientation! This will be held on Thursday March 3rd from 5-6PM in the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership (CSIL- on the fourth floor of the Student Union).
This will be an opportunity to learn more about us and do the mandatory orientation in order to become a member of Project Sunshine!

Surgery Undergraduate Research Fluency (SURF) Program
The SURF program is a volunteer opportunity for people interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. The program focuses on research yet provides opportunities for exposure to all aspects of the surgery department through regular conferences, shadowing, and networking opportunities.
The Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) is the publicly-funded health care safety net for residents of Maricopa County. MIHS serves a racially and ethnically diverse population, many of whom face major challenges to accessing health care, such as language barriers, a lack of insurance, complex medical problems and difficult socioeconomic situations. MIHS is committed to providing culturally and linguistically competent care to all that enter its doors.
MIHS clinical facilities include Maricopa Medical Center, a 450-bed, acute-care full-service hospital with 20,000 inpatient admissions annually; the Comprehensive Healthcare Center, a multi-specialty ambulatory care clinic; 10 community-oriented Family Health Centers, strategically located throughout the County; and the McDowell Healthcare Clinic, serving people with HIV.
The Arizona Burn Center, located within Maricopa Medical Center, a 450-bed acute-care, full service hospital and Level I trauma center with 20,000 inpatient admissions annually. Founded in 1965 by Dr. MacDonald Wood, the Arizona Burn Center has grown from a few beds set aside for burn care to the second busiest burn center in the nation, caring for over 900 adults and children each year. It is the regional burn center for the southwestern United States, serving children and adults from Arizona, surrounding states and Northern Mexico. This center of excellence is a 19-bed facility, all of which can be dedicated intensive care beds, expandable to 44 beds institution-wide. The outpatient Arizona Burn Clinic serves approximately 5000 children and adults each year through five outpatient clinic rooms, a pressure garment measuring room, massage therapy and a dedicated telemedicine room. Emergency burn care is a dedicated 24 hours a day service, now available nationwide through the federal- and state-supported Arizona Burn Disaster Network.
This program will run from June 2 through August 10, 2011.

Would you like to participate in a University Approved Study involving Alternative Medicine?
We are looking for participants to explore the effectiveness of alternative medicine on shoulders.

Participants must:
• Be at least 18 years old
• Have limited range of motion in either or both shoulders
• Have shoulder problems for at least 1 year (not genetic)
The study will take a maximum of 30 minutes of your time and you will be paid $10 for travel costs.
